Tennis Elbow

Lateral Epicondylitis

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis Elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition that affects the outer portion of the elbow and is usually the result of overloading the extensor tendons of the wrist. This can happen either through repetitive motions or sudden forceful movements of wrist extension. Unlike the name suggests, tennis elbow does not only affect those who play tennis – anyone can develop this painful condition. People with work or hobbies that include repetitive movements of the wrist, elbow, or gripping activities are at higher risk of developing tennis elbow.

Pain with lateral epicondylitis is typically located on the bony prominence on the outer side of the elbow. This is where the tendon of the extensor muscles attach. Pain can also spread down the outer forearm and sometimes move into the wrist as well.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Tenderness on outside of elbow
  • Pain in outer forearm and/or wrist
  • Weakness in the arm
  • Pain with gripping, squeezing, and/or twisting motions
  • Pain when straightening arm fully and/or bending wrist
  • Tingling in fingers
