Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a technique used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve function. Acupuncture can be applied to almost any part of the body, depending the goal and its intended purpose.

Acupuncture treatments are administered by specially trained and rostered physiotherapists at our physiotherapy clinic. Thin, sterile needles are gently placed in precise locations depending on the area of concern in order to promote natural blood-flow. These needles also stimulate the brain and spinal cord to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals to assist the body's natural healing process and offer pain relief.

Once put in place, the needles are left in for 10 to 15 minutes. During this time, you are placed in a relaxed, comfortable position in one of our private treatment rooms. The lights are often dimmed to allow you to relax and let your nervous system take a break.

Once finished, the acupuncture needles are removed and disposed of appropriately. Acupuncture needles are never used twice - new packaged and sterile needles are used for every acupuncture treatment you receive.

What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?

During acupuncture, needles are placed at specific locations called meridians and left in place for 10-15 minutes or more before being removed. This is used to promote healing, relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve function.

Dry Needling is specifically used to reduce tension in muscles and eliminate knots, also known as trigger points. This is done by inserting the needle into the muscle and gently pistoning the needle around the area for about 10 seconds before removing the needle.
